Diagram of mesentery peritoneum. The mesentery of the small intestine is simply called the mesentery. The mesentery is a double layer of visceral peritoneum that attaches to the gastrointestinal tract. As seen in the diagram to the right the intestines are in essence suspended from the dorsal aspect of the peritoneal cavity by a fused double layer of parietal peritoneum called mesentery. The visceral peritoneum surrounds the mesentery forms the serosal layer of the gut and is in continuity with the parietal peritoneum which covers the extraperitoneal space.
As the ligaments mesenteries and suspended organs develop the peritoneal cavity forms recesses that remain interconnected as the peritoneal cavity and separate from the subperitoneal space fig. It consists of a double sheet of peritoneum folded on itself so that it has four layers. The inner layer the visceral peritoneum is wrapped around the internal organs that are located inside the intraperitoneal cavity. It is thinner than the parietal peritoneum.
A mesentery is double layer of visceral peritoneum. A fan shaped fold of the peritoneum called the mesentery binds the jejunum and ileum of the small intestine to the posterior abdominal wall the mesentery extends from the posterior abdominal wall to wrap around the small intestine and then returns to its origin forming a double layered structure. It connects an intraperitoneal organ to usually the posterior abdominal wall. It helps in storing fat and allowing blood vessels lymphatics and nerves to supply the intestines among other functions.
There are two layers of the peritoneum. The inner layer the visceral peritoneum is wrapped around the visceral organs located inside the intraperitoneal space for protection. This is a part of the peritoneal cavity which lies behind the stomach and the liver. And the greater sac is the larger part of the peritoneal cavity and makes up most of the cavity.
